Hardwood options and benefits

The first thing you’ll have to choose when considering hardwood flooring is the wood species. Ranging from very soft, to very hard, the level of traffic you have through your home will determine which is best for you. For instance, if you have a great deal of foot traffic in the rooms you need refloored, you’ll want to go with a much harder species, while areas such as closets can be fitted with a much softer wood.

Once you have decided upon your species, you can then decide what shade of stain color you’d like. Some species, such as cherry, have a gorgeous natural color to the wood, and sometimes a simple clear coat is all the finish you need. Still, you have a wide range of choices from very light to very dark, and you’re sure to find something that perfectly matches your décor.

Finally, you’ll need to choose what type of finish you’d like. Many homeowners go with the classic glossy finish, that most usually comes to mind when hardwood flooring is mentioned. There are other options available though, including vintage, distressed and hand scraped finishes. Any of the latter will do nicely in protecting against visible signs of everyday wear and tear. You’ll find that you see fewer scuffs and scratches, and sometimes even gouges, simply blend into the texture of the finish. For more information on available species, stains and finishes, be sure to speak with your flooring professional.
