Knowing when to re-stretch your carpet

With proper care and cleaning, your carpet should easily last for many years. There usually comes a time, however, when you will need to re-stretch your carpet. This usually happens after the floor has seen several years of repeated traffic, but with a little observation and some testing, you should be able to tell if that time has come for your own carpet. The good news is, it doesn’t mean your carpet has gone bad or needs to be replaced. With the right service, your floors will be looking as good as new in no time.

Carpet re-stretch basics

Careful examination could show damage to the structure of the base of your carpet. If that damage is large enough the carpet around it could get very loose, which means you should have your carpet re-stretched as soon as possible.

Another situation that necessitates a carpet re-stretch is carpet that is wrinkled or lumpy. This can happen normally, over the course of several years, or it could be caused by moving a piece of heavy furniture across the floor. Both lumps and wrinkles are fairly easy to see, especially if you crouch and look across the top of the carpet.Examining the edges of your carpet will also show telltale signs of the need for a carpet re-stretch. If any of the carpet edges lift up, that area definitely needs to be re-stretched.

Re-stretching carpet should always be left to a professional service, so you’re left with no out of pocket expenses should something go wrong. Additionally, you will not be out the cost of rented equipment, specialized training or assistants.

Your service professionals at Sanford Carpet & Flooring can have the job done quickly and easily. After pulling back the old carpet, and the padding underneath, the tack strip will then have to be removed. After that, the carpet will be reset and then stretched appropriately.
