I received a call several months ago from a member of my synagogue, Congregation Ohev Shalom in Maitland. Jay Stanek told me he was our representative for a home being built in our area by Habitat for Humanity. What made this project unique is that it would be a Multi-Faith Build, the first of its kind in Florida.
The project, called Harmony House would be comprised of volunteers from the local Jewish, Christian and Muslim Community. Jay was calling to find out if Sanford Carpet would be willing to help with the flooring in some capacity – securing it at a discount or possibly some help with installation.
Ira and I were thrilled to be part of the team. We called two of our vendors; Mohawk Flooring and Boone Distributors to get them on board as well. Boone donated the padding for the entire house and Mohawk offered the carpet, a wonderful product from their SmartStrand line with Lifetime Stain protection at a substantial discount. Sanford Carpet then donated the balance of the carpet cost and the installation.

I have a deep appreciation for Habitat for Humanity and their mission to help families in need. They do not offer a handout, but rather a hand up. Recipients of the homes, pay a reduced mortgage and have put many hours of sweat equity into the home as well, working alongside the volunteers to build the home. During Women’s Build Week, several of my colleagues from Business Networking International (BNI) chapters in the Orlando region form a team and participate together on a home that Habitat is building for a deserving family.
Habitat also operates several ReStore centers in the community reselling at discount household items in good shape that have been donated. Sanford Carpet often donates surplus carpet and tile to the ReStore center in Sanford.
Carmella Miller, who is the recipient of Harmony House understandably broke down after all the clergy blessed her new home and Congressman John Mica presented her with the key.
Later, she told me she loved the carpet, especially the color – a warm taupe, perfect for the active lives of her four children.
